Message for the St. Ignatius Catholic Church 50th Anniversary Magazine by His Excellency the Governor
Mr. Peter J. Smith, CBE
Do what lieth in thy power, and God will assist in thy good will.
St. Thomas a'Kempis (1380-1471).
The St. Ignatius community has grown substantially in 50 years. From modest beginnings, when a priest from Jamaica visited every six months, you have expanded your physical presence and increased the number and kind of programmes that serve your faithful.
Your two congregations, George Town and Christ the Redeemer in West Bay, indicate the growth in Cayman's Catholic population. Your primary and high schools are respected islandwide for their high academic standards. Offering mass in Spanish shows how quickly St. Ignatius responds to the needs of the larger society.
If I may paraphrase the words of St. Thomas a'Kempis presented above, you have done much that was within your power to do. This celebration now centers on thanking God for assisting in and then blessing your efforts.
I congratulate the St. Ignatius community for a productive first 50 years, and wish you more fulfilling years of serving God and the people of these islands.
